Football Pitch Markings and Tactical Zones Explained
Identify football pitch markings and learn how coaches use width, depth and tactical lanes to analyse the space between them.

Read the boundary lines
The longer boundaries are touchlines and the shorter ones are goal lines. The halfway line divides the pitch. The centre circle sets the restart distance at a kick-off. Pitch dimensions can vary within the applicable competition rules.
Understand the penalty markings
The penalty area establishes where the goalkeeper can handle the ball under the laws and where certain defending offences result in a penalty kick. The penalty arc helps mark the required distance from the penalty mark outside the area at a penalty kick.
Separate laws from analysis
A coach can refer to the final third, wide channel or half-space to describe movement. Those reference zones help players discuss where to stand and receive. For official field markings and dimensions, consult IFAB Law 1.
