The Box-to-Box Midfielder Role Explained
Learn when a box-to-box midfielder should support build-up, arrive late in the area and recover to protect the centre.

Start underneath the ball
Offer the full-back or winger a diagonal pass inside. Once the winger can face forward, decide whether to run beyond or stay available for a return pass. If the holding midfielder has already been pulled wide, central cover may be the priority.
Time the late run
Arrive near the penalty spot as a wide teammate reaches the byline. A striker can occupy the near-post defender and leave a lane for the cutback. Starting the run too early gives a marker time to follow and leaves the midfield exposed if the move breaks down.
Recover on the inside
After a turnover, run towards the space an opponent can attack. Recovering through the centre can take away a dangerous pass even if the ball carrier remains wide. In review, identify the moment the midfielder decided to go and check who stayed behind.
