The Ball-Playing Centre-Back Explained
Learn when a centre-back should carry forward, pass through a line or reset possession under pressure.

Draw the first defender
Carry into open space if the striker stays away and your partner is positioned to cover. As the striker commits, release the ball into the lane they have vacated. A small advance can open a pass without leaving the defence exposed.
Find the next action
Before playing into midfield, check whether the receiver can turn or has an obvious first-time pass. A pass through a line has little value if it leaves the receiver trapped. If the lane closes, use the goalkeeper or opposite centre-back to reset.
Judge the risk by location
Losing the ball in the centre close to goal leaves fewer teammates able to delay the attack. Watch for an opponent screening the safe return pass. Practise carrying and passing against an active striker who can choose when to press.
