The Sweeper-Keeper Role Explained
Learn how a sweeper-keeper supports a high defensive line and decides when to come out for a pass in behind.

Set a starting position
Stand high enough to reach a through ball that travels beyond the defence, while staying able to recover if the passer has time to shoot. Adjust as pressure on the ball changes. A passer facing forward with room calls for greater caution.
Read the race early
Compare the pace and angle of the pass with the runner’s starting point. If you can reach the ball first, commit and choose a clearance or controlled pass. Outside your own penalty area, the ordinary handball restrictions apply.
Build with a spare player
Offer an angle behind the centre-backs so they can switch the ball across the first press. Scan for the next pass before receiving. Rehearse clear calls with defenders so only one player attacks a loose ball.
