Invite a choice

A false nine starts centrally and drops towards midfield. If a centre-back follows, a winger can attack the channel they leave. If the defender stays, the forward may receive between the lines and turn.

Time the support run

The winger should start wide enough to remain visible to the passer, then run diagonally as the forward drops. The opposite winger can stay available for a switch. Ask one midfielder to offer a safe pass behind the ball.

Recognise the limitation

Against a defence that hands the forward over to a holding midfielder, the dropping movement may create little space. Try a bounce pass to a facing midfielder or a run behind from deep. Track whether the move produces a receiver facing goal.
