Football Defence Strategy for a Connected Team
Coach pressure, cover and balance so players can delay attacks, protect the middle and defend together.

Give each defender a job
The nearest player slows the ball carrier and influences their direction. A teammate covers diagonally behind. A third player protects the next dangerous pass, often across the middle. When the ball moves, exchange jobs together.
Build a simple practice
Use a directional four-versus-four game with a central scoring gate. Award attackers a point for a controlled pass through the gate. Ask defenders to guide the ball wide, then close when the receiver faces the touchline.
Review the distance
Freeze the game when the first defender steps out. Can the covering player reach the gap before a runner? If they cannot, start the unit closer together or delay the press. Compare the number of clear central entries across repetitions.
