The Defensive Midfielder Role Explained
See how a defensive midfielder protects central space, supports build-up and decides when to step out of the holding position.

Screen first
A holding midfielder positions between the ball and the opponent’s most dangerous central receiver. When a centre-back steps out, the holder can cover the space in front of the remaining defender. If the ball goes wide, shift across without opening a straight pass back inside.
Offer a useful angle
During build-up, move diagonally off the centre-back’s line so the receiver can see you. Scan before the pass and use the back foot if it lets you play forward safely. When a marker is tight, a first-time return pass can open an angle for a teammate.
Judge the step
If the opponent receives facing backwards and another midfielder can cover, step to prevent the turn. If they receive facing forward with runners on both sides, delay and protect the middle. Review clips for access denied as well as tackles made.
