How to Read a Football Tactics Diagram
Read player markers, movement arrows, passing arrows and pitch orientation before interpreting a football tactics diagram.

Orient the pitch
Find the attacking direction, then identify which team has possession. Shirt numbers usually label roles or specific players, depending on the diagram. Check whether it shows a starting shape, a freeze-frame or the final positions after movement.
Read arrows in order
A solid arrow often shows a pass and a dashed arrow may show a run, but conventions vary. Use the legend. Where several actions overlap, find the first pass and follow the movements it triggers.
Look beyond the arrows
Find the spare player and the nearest defender who can close the gap. Ask what happens if the first pass is blocked. A good diagram shows enough support and cover to explain the alternative.
