Low Block Football and How to Play Against It
Recognise the block
In a low block, a team defends with much of its unit near its own penalty area, restricting space through the centre and behind the back line. A good block moves across with the ball. The far-side defenders still need to watch runners even when play seems safely contained on the opposite wing.
Stretch before you force a pass
Circulate the ball until a defender has to choose between staying narrow and stepping towards a wide receiver. A fast switch can let the far-side winger receive before the block travels across. Support that receiver with an inside option so the move can continue if the first defender closes quickly.
Change the height of the delivery
If centre-backs deal comfortably with high crosses, try getting the ball closer to the byline. A delayed runner towards the penalty spot can meet a cutback as defenders retreat towards goal. One attacker can occupy the near post to pull a defender away from that space.
Plan for the turnover
Keep support behind the ball and position someone to screen the first pass into the opposition’s outlet. If the opponent clears and the next receiver can turn freely, an attack around their box can quickly become a sprint towards yours.
Assess the chance quality
In review, count examples where the attack found a player facing goal inside the box or reached the byline with support. Long spells of possession can leave the block comfortable if the ball moves too slowly to make defenders change their jobs.
