Football Tactical Transitions: What to Do in the First Few Seconds

Use a short checklist for attacking and defending transitions. Decide when to play forward, counter-press, delay or recover into shape.

After winning possession

Look for a receiver facing forward and a run behind the first defender. Play early if the lane is open and the receiver has support. If the first pass would trap them against the touchline, keep the ball and rebuild the shape.

After losing possession

The nearest player decides whether they can stop the ball carrier from turning. Teammates close the closest escape routes if they are already near enough. Otherwise recover inside and make the opponent take the longer route around the team.

Review both sides of the same clip

Freeze at the turnover and again after the next two actions. Ask where the first forward pass went and which player could delay it. Use the clip to coach the decision that changed the attack, whether it was a pass, recovery run or decision to wait.

Put it into practice

Give the two teams a shared cue to end a counter-press, such as the opponent receiving facing forward beyond the closest covering player. Once that happens, everybody can start their recovery at the same moment.
