Three Football Pressing Drills That Reward Teamwork

Coach pressing with three football drills that develop the first defender’s approach, midfield cover and recovery when the press is beaten.

Pressing drill diagram showing the first defender closing and a second defender screening

Drill one: show play wide

Set up three attackers against two defenders with a central exit gate. The nearest defender curves their approach to screen the gate. The second protects the inside pass. Rotate roles and ask the ball carrier where they felt able to play.

Drill two: trigger on the touchline

Use four-versus-four and two wide outlets. The defending team earns a point for winning the ball after a wide receiver takes a backwards or loose touch. Allow the attacking team to switch play when defenders close too early.

Drill three: recover after the press

Add an end target behind the pressing unit. When the opposition escapes, ask the nearest player to delay and everyone else to recover through the centre. Track successful recoveries as well as regains. Progress only when players can explain which cue changed their decision.

Put it into practice

Change one variable at a time. Widen the pitch to test whether the team can travel together, or narrow it to help the players recognise the trap. Keep the success criteria steady so you can compare the decisions between rounds.
