Football Positions Explained for 11-a-Side
Learn where each football position starts, what it does in possession and how responsibilities change between a 4–3–3 and a 4–2–3–1.

Read the lines
A goalkeeper protects the goal and can provide a spare passing option. Centre-backs defend central space and full-backs cover the flanks. A holding midfielder screens the back line, while other midfielders connect play. Wingers stretch or attack inside. The centre-forward occupies defenders and gives the side a target.
Compare two shapes
In a 4–3–3, one midfielder may sit behind two more advanced teammates. A 4–2–3–1 usually starts with two deeper midfielders and a central attacker behind the striker. Watch which player covers the full-back when they advance. Shirt numbers are conventions and can vary.
Watch the role change
Pause once at a goal kick and once after possession is lost. Locate the same full-back in both frames. A player can start wide and move inside to support a pass, then recover towards the touchline when defending. That movement tells you more about the assignment than the lineup graphic.
