First-Touch Football Drills Under Pressure
Practise the first touch with a colour-gate exercise, a recovering defender and a realistic decision about when to turn.

Receive through a gate
Set two small gates on either side of the receiver. The feeder points to a gate before passing and the receiver takes their first touch towards it. Change the cue to a moving defender as players get comfortable.
Use a recovering defender
Start the defender a few steps behind the receiver. They can close either shoulder once the feeder passes. The receiver can turn into space or play a return pass. Score decisions that retain possession even if they use the safe option.
Progress into play
Make it two-versus-two with a teammate beyond the first defender. Vary the speed and direction of service so the receiver must adapt. Review whether the first touch sets up a useful second action rather than judging touch length alone.
