Football Skills for Receiving Under Pressure
Improve scanning, first touch and ball protection with three skills players can practise in realistic match situations.

Scan before the ball travels
Check both shoulders while the passer prepares. Look for the nearest defender and your best next pass. Check again if the ball travels slowly. The goal is to use the information to choose a touch before contact.
Choose a first touch
Open your hips if the far side is free and use the back foot to move away from pressure. If a defender is tight, receive with the foot furthest from them and keep the ball within reach. A first-time set can be the best choice when you cannot turn.
Protect and release
Place your body between the defender and the ball without holding the opponent. Keep a supporting pass available. Practise with a defender who can approach from either side, and give the receiver a point for choosing the safe exit.
