What the extra players change

Nine-a-side gives players more opportunities to work in lines and cover teammates. Count eight outfield players plus the goalkeeper. Teach distances through passing decisions: can the player on the ball find someone on a different line, and can a teammate cover the receiver if possession changes?

3–3–2 for paired forwards

A front pair can split to offer two exits or stagger so one checks short while the other threatens behind. The midfield three need to shift together when a wide player steps out. If the far-side midfielder stays on the touchline while the ball is on the other flank, the opponent may find a clear route through the middle.

3–2–3 for natural width

Three forwards can stretch the pitch and give the goalkeeper or back three visible outlets. Ask the ball-side winger to stay wide during the first pass and then move inside if a deeper teammate can supply width. When both central midfielders chase the same ball, the gap in front of the back three becomes difficult to protect.

4–3–1 for full-back roles

Use a back four when you want to practise full-back and centre-back relationships. Advance one full-back when there is secure possession and let the other narrow to help cover. Give the lone striker an early supporting run from midfield so a forward pass can lead to an attack.

A coaching check

After three build-ups, ask the keeper which two passes they could see and ask the far-side player where they would move after a turnover. Their answers give you a clearer picture of what the team understands than a formation diagram alone.
